Tipping Guidlines

Kilimanjaro Tipping Guidline

Tipping is a common practice in Tanzania to show appreciation for excellent service. While tipping is not mandatory, it is customary and greatly appreciated by the staff who work hard to ensure your satisfaction. Tips are normally paid at the end of the climb or safari. Here are some general tipping guidelines to consider:

Mountain Climbing:
  • Head Guide: $15 per day
  • Assistant Guide: $10 per day
  • Cook: $10 per day
  • Porters: $7 per day per porter (distributed among the porters)

Note: These amounts are per group, not per climber.

Wildlife Safaris:
  • Safari Guide/Driver: $20 per day
  • Camp/Lodge Staff: $5 per day

Note: These amounts are per group, not per person.

Hotel/Restaurant Staff:
  • Waitstaff: 10% – 15% of the total bill (if not already included)
  • Hotel Staff (bellhops, housekeeping): $2 per service
  • Other Staff (concierge, spa, etc.): $5 per service

It’s important to note that these are suggested guidelines, and you can adjust the tip amount based on the level of service and your satisfaction. If you are in a group, you can contribute as a group or individually, depending on your preference.

It’s also a good practice to carry small bills to make it easier to distribute tips. Remember to consider the overall quality of service, as exceptional service may warrant a higher tip, while poor service may warrant a smaller tip or no tip at all.

Please keep in mind that tipping is a personal decision, and it’s important to be respectful and considerate of local customs and norms.
